Spin, Spin; Spin!

So a friend asked me to make her a mix to listen to during her spinning class with different tempos. Here is my fat burning offering! I also think this would be pretty sick to play at a party, but of course I am biased. Or I would have the coolest parties.

Farewell to Freedom

What better way to spend one's last day of freedom before embarking upon a new career than celebrating with a mix? And what a mix. I'm obviously biased but I think this is one of the sickest mixes that I have done, and that you will hear. It's not every day you find The Specials, The Prodigy, Aaliyah, So Solid Crew and Skream all nestling alongside each other with some fresh Electro House thrown in on top.

DOWNLOAD THIS AND BLAST IT!

G-Funk'd Out

Continuing with the G-Funk revival, yeah you love it. And this contains a couple of gems. Starting the mix with 'Doggystyle' seems appropriate as the chorus sings "It's time to take you motherfuckers down memory lane". Not that you are a motherfucker, but it's the trip! West side certainly was the best side back in nine-tree. And now I am out of unmixed tracks until Death Row releases more of their archives. Still, three mixes isn't too bad. Reminisce! I should point out that on some tracks I edited out verses or hooks that seemed a bit crap, which should enhance the listening pleasure.

Gangsta Rap Colouring Book

I have to say thank you to my friend The DJ, who designed the cover art and the name for this mix. Effectively this is the same mix as G-Funk Mix, aside from having a better quality version of Puffin' On Blunts... and removing the low quality version of Head Doctor and replacing it with All Eyez On Me. It's good to be a perfectionist!

Death Row In Tha Mix

The second volume of G-Funk. I miss this sound! Compare it with modern hippedy-hop, this music actually has a sound and ages well. Well obviously, I wouldn't want to mix it otherwise. Anyway, this mix has a lot of b-sides, extended mixes and unreleased tracks from Death Row Records. You would like this if you liked All Eyez On Me, Tha Chronic, Doggystyle & Dogg Food. In fact, if you like a chilled kind of sound, this is for you, as long as you aren't a puritan. It is rap after all. There is only one song that is one both of my G-Funk mixes, Puffin' On Blunts and Drankin' Tanqueray, but once you hear it I think you'll understand why... This mix also includes one of my favourite mixes I've done, when Afro Puffs goes into Never Had A Friend Like Me. I just love the drop! So take the gamble and download, you never know, you might enjoy it.

Chilled Out Dubstep

The two previous dubstep mixes that I've done have been a bit on the banging side. That's usually how I like it, but I was going through the tracks and found quite a bit of more mellow dubstep. In fact I think it sounds like Tech House a little, only just a bit faster. Perfectly good sounds to have on! So... get to downloading. And let me know what you think if you download it.

Blends, Blends, Blends

This isn't actually a mix, but a collection of remixes I've made. Strictly speaking, over here in the US they are 'Blends' as they are just the vocals over a different track, but they are fresh, dollar dollar bill yo. And I think some of them sound better than the originals (I don't blanket like Notorious B.I.G. or 2Pac for example). So umm... check it!

G-Funk Mix

Recently, I have come across some compilations of unreleased music from Death Row Records, and some of it was pretty good, which inspired me to have another stab at a G-Funk mix. I think it's pretty good. So if you want some laid back west coast g shit to sip your gin and juice to, I recommend you get this! And if anyone wants to design some cover art for it, go for it.

House Mix

No album art for this one as I was feeling lazy in the oppressive summer heat of New York City. But here are some beats to freshen you up like the cool summer's breeze that I wish was blowing here right now.

(You could also pretend that this was all intentional and that I was going for a minimalist approach with no art, given the name of this mix is the inspired 'House Mix').

This is House, House music - mostly from the late 90s. Say 1996 - 2001 because there is some Disco House from the early 00s. Not exactly chilled shit, but not really banging the shit out of your speakers either. A reminiscent blend is what I'll call it.

Tracklisting

01 Basement Jaxx/Romeo
02 Groovin Vol 2/Remix #1
03 Sneaker Pimps/Spin Spin Sugar (Armand's Dark Garage Mix)

18 Faithless/Insomnia (Armand's European Vacation Mix)
19 Clubzound/Gimme The Money
20 The Wiseguys/Cowboy 78 (Roger Sanchez Remix)

*I think Armand is on crack here, at the time this came out Drum N Bass was one with Jungle and this sounds nothing like that, it's quite obviously Speed Garage. Or as the Sneaker Pimps remix is called, Dark Garage.

Back When I Had Decks & Could Mix

This mix makes me wish I had decks again (and that I would practice lots and not get lazy like before). I found a recording of this mix that I did for a friend back in 2005, and I think it's quite good. No track listing as such because I don't remember the names of some of the songs, but it's a 35 minute session for the years 1996-1999, with some House, Speed Garage and Garage back when it was 'House and Garage'. Plus the sheer novelty of being actually produced by two turntables and a mixer.

More Electro Goodness

I really am getting into Electro House. I have to be a bit picky going through the records on offer, so this is more my personal tastes in current Electro but I obviously think it's good! 13 fresh Electro riddums waiting to tear through your speaker system.

Grime Time

I heart Grime. Not what Grime has become, but original Grime, from between 2002 - 2005, when it really was a fresh sound and a scene to stand alongside Hip-Hop, rather than underneath it. Somewhere along the way it got lost and turned shit. It's pathetic that the best Grime album released is from 2003 (Boy In Da Corner), and pretty much is the only Grime album that's been released. All other Grime artists haven't released Grime albums. And which is the best selling album? Boy In Da Corner. Most MCs release horrendous Pop and wanna-be Hip-Hop, which is not the reason that they were signed. Roll Deep, Kano, Wiley, Dizzee Rascal (Maths + English was an abomination), Newham Generals (Generally Speaking is not really the type of thing that got them signed in the first place) have all released anti-Grime. The mixtapes are generally even worse. How much I've wasted in the hope that one will be good. It's easy to see why people download, why spend £8 on a CD you want to throw in the bin? The only MC who really has kept the Grime flow is Durrty Goodz when it comes to CD releases. Ghetto on some tracks, Wiley is sporadic, Kano on one or two, but Goodz is the only one consistent.

This mix is what Grime is all about, and should be about. When it was the shit instead of being shit. Stuff to play in your car and go mad to.

See, I'm balanced musically. I don't just like Garage and Grime! I got into Tech House around a year ago after downloading some Clairvoyant sets from Rinse FM (those are some good DJs, The Clairvoyants). I love the bass on this music! Well duh I suppose, that's a given if I like it... This first mix I did for Tech House is not CD friendly (it's an hour and 45 minutes), so it's strictly iPod business for this one.

Sweet Sexy Sub Sounds

This is probably my favourite mix I have ever done. I love this style of Garage. Well really it's the style that El-B produced. I love the beats, the dark bass, the vocal samples... These were the sounds that used to rip up the airwaves in London. I wish there was a way to get the rest of his back catalogue that's not on The Roots of El-B. If you are a bass lover, download a copy of this and hook it up to a subwoofer post haste - you won't regret it. Comments on this one would particularly appreciated as it is my current pride and joy!

Electro House Goodness

You see, I don't just mix Garage and its derivatives! The title for this is a little misleading though, as there is some Bassline in here too. I do like this mix though, lots of good bass and it's fairly fresh tracks for the most part! A novelty for me unless either Dubstep starts producing shitloads of bass bangers or Garage comes roaring back like 2003-2009 never happened.

Dubstep Is The Future

Why is Dubstep the future? Garage is gone (but not forgotten), I'm not convinced that Bassline will last as its direct predeccesors all fared badly over time, and Grime has gone absolutely shit compared to when it first emerged in 2002. Dubstep though has been going strong for about 7 years (I refuse to class tracks by Groove Chronicles as early Dubstep; they were strong bassy 2-Step), and seems to have established itself. So it is the future by default. Not that I think it's crap - I am a big fan of the bass pumping Dubstep. Not so sure about the ones without the bass that just seem to go "waah-wah-waahhh-wah-wah" with a synthesizer though, so you shan't find any of that filth in these mixes!

Back In The Day - UK Garage 10 Years Ago

This mix is aimed at being the sort of thing you may have tuned into a pirate radio station 10 years ago and heard being played on the air. Some are commercial, some are underground; all are heavy and begging to be rinsed out once again. So why not oblige?

An Education In Garage

For this mix, I went for something a little different. I wanted to include tracks that really wouldn't have featured on a commercial cd (although nowadays there are probably only about 50 tracks that would possibly be included anyway, and half of those are songs like 'Sambucca' or riddums like 'Go DJ' which really were part of the reason why Garage just vanished - despite being widely popular, they had little production values and are indicative of the cheap pap flooding the market trying to cash in on the popularity of the sound of the underground). So for the most part, these are songs that are deserving of a wider audience but are outside the limited pool that anyone compiling a CD thinks we need to hear for the 18th time. Think of this as a fresh compilation to take you back in time to when Garage still ruled the waves (unless you are from Essex like me. Garage is timeless there).

Garage Classics II

For this mix, I am gratefully indebted to YouTube, where I discovered the majority of these songs. Some may question the legality of that, but we are talking about records that would be available in one or two pressings around 1998-2002, that are now unavailable to buy and so YouTube provided me, living in the US now and having sold my decks back home in England, with a means of having these tunes and in turn offering them to a wider audience. I wish though that some record store would offer up recordings of all old vinyl releases, I would be on them like a shot. In any case, this is a collection of true underground Garage vibes that would have been shaking car windows all across London in 2000.

Garage Classics

Garage Classics is the first in a series of mixes where I have tried to put some of the classic tracks of UK Garage in a previous un-heard of mix, usually with the result of me wishing that mixes like these had been on compilations like Pure Garage or even the recent MoS Garage compilation that The Wideboys did a shoddy job on. So if you are a Garage fan and feel like reminiscing about the old days, give this a download.
